5 storylines to follow at indoor track and field conference championship meets

Chaotic 4x400 caps men's 2025 NCAA indoor championship

DI indoor track and field conference championships are here! We’ve already seen champions crowned in the SWAC, MEAC, Sun Belt, America East, CAA, MAAC, and soon to be more. Conference championships also mean it's the last weekend for athletes to qualify for the DI national championships.

A lot is at stake.

Here are some storylines you should follow during the weekend’s loaded slate.

Will more records fall this weekend?

So far, we’ve seen 10 collegiate records fall during the indoor season. That was without the pressures of an individual conference title. With that as an added factor, the times could get even faster.

A deeper look at the records from this season will show that three records were run in the city of Boston. That’s the same sight as the ACC track and field championships this year. Get your popcorn ready!

RECORD TRACKER: Every track and field record broken in 2026

Can anyone knock off Arkansas women in the SEC?

The Arkansas women’s track and field team has won 11 straight indoor titles. Will the Razorbacks make it 12 in 2026? If so, it won’t be without some tough competition.

Arkansas isn’t even the top-ranked women’s team in the national TFRI at just No. 4 overall. Georgia ranks No. 2, powered by some talented sprinters. South Carolina also ranks within the top five, coming in fifth.

If the Razorbacks are to 12-peat, it could be closer than last year’s 55.5-point win.

UNDER THE RADAR: Sleeper teams to watch during the men's indoor track and field postseason

How will top freshmen perform when the lights are brightest?

32 freshmen rank within the top-10 marks nationally in an event. Georgia’s Jonathan Simms (m 400m), Kansas State’s Alan Hanna (m high jump), Georgia’s Adeajah Hodge (w 200m), and BYU’s Jane Hedengren (w 5K) all lead the nation in their events. Yet that quartet and others, those performances came during the regular season. While the performances so far could be enough to get them to nationals, conference championships present a new opportunity for the sport’s top rookies.

VALENTINE'S RECAP: Recapping an exciting weekend of track and field

What will 4x400 relays look like with conference titles at stake?

We most recently saw South Carolina’s men’s squad run the second-fastest men’s indoor 4x400 meter relay in world history. That could be only a preview of what’s to come. Teams have tested out relay combinations all season long and could send out their best squads to win a conference championship. That means we could see record times.
